July 30, 2005 …At last. What I’ve been saying all along was finally acknowledged by the Senate Majority Leader today on Good Morning America. Dr. Bill Frist will speak to the Senate today in favor of funding more embryonic stem cell lines. Frist declares that these embryos “would otherwise be discarded.” Hmm...what a revelation! Is this something new? In fact, this has always been the case - so I find his support today (from last month) somewhat comical, at best. I find it profoundly telling that both the pro-life movement and the Vatican denounce embryonic stem cell research and abortion but ignore the destruction of leftover embryos, so as not to alienate the masses of “Christian” couples who refuse to donate their leftover embryos to infertile couples (thereby supporting “life”) and flush them down the toilet instead. Folks, if you believe that embryonic stem cell research is morally wrong because it involves the destruction of an embryo, that’s fine – stand by that. But then you must also speak out against couples who do not donate their embryos to other infertile couples and decide to discard them instead - at least then your position is consistent. But to decide that washing an embryo down the drain is acceptable but donating the same embryos for scientific research is wrong is baseless and incomprehensibly stupid. After all, there is exactly zero difference in destroying an embryo by washing it down the sink or using it to advance science. Either way the embryo dies. What’s more, one could reasonably argue that if it’s donated for embryonic stem cell research, that embryo would be able to provide science with potentially life-saving therapies for others. At the very least, that act supports life. The pro-life movement is comprised of a bunch of fanatical loudmouths with positions drenched in so much hypocrisy they'd sink if debates were held anywhere near water. But on the position of leftover embryos destroyed by their own moms and dads who refuse to donate them to other infertile couples…you hear nothing. Just yellow-bellied, deafening silence. ------------ About the author: Jane Hill is a prolific writer and researcher and is working on a children's book, Nonje in Crampons.
