Twenty-Two To One - Lousy Odds

By Michael John McCrae
July 29, 2005

She was 13-years-old and walking home. A car pulled up alongside of her and one of the four male occupants invited her to join them in the car. She felt safe enough. She was betrayed.

The car stopped at a neighborhood park. There was a group of people there smoking grass and drinking alcohol. This group offered the 13-year-old a drink and when she didn’t want any, they forced her to drink.

Upon getting her drunk, she was then “dragged” into a nearby woman’s restroom. Six males raped the 13-year-old while another 16 males “looked on and cheered.”

It was not six men who raped this young girl. It was 22 men who raped her. Twenty-two to one is lousy odds in anyone’s book when it comes to rape.

Here are a few quotes from “6 teens arrested on suspicion of gang-raping girl” by Amanda Durrani and Eric Malnic of the LA Times.

Ron Beilke, city councilman of Pico Rivera, CA where the crime took place said: “It’s horrible. The whole community is up in arms. We’re a close-knit community, and the whole town is affected. We definitely have a lot of healing to do.”

When 22 men in your town rape a 13-year-old, it is time for a lot more than healing. It is time to find all the scum involved and lock the bastards away for as long as the law permits.

In what might be considered a companion piece to this real-life drama; Bill Bell of the “Whittier Daily News” recounts his experience the day he went to this park in Pico Rivera to do some investigating for his column: “No fathoming what’s gone wrong” (July 15th, 2005)

Bill Bell went to the scene of the rape and what he found did not make him very happy. He found another group of 14-19-year-olds that intimidated him enough to just leave the park and thank is good fortune.

He wrote: “I wondered where there parents were. I wondered if some of them might someday be willing candidates of a new generation of terrorists. I wondered if they had any idea of the folly of their current lifestyles. I thought about my own kids and thanked God they are in their 40s and good parents. Those young men and women between the ages of 16 and 19 who were charged with rape Thursday are just one small step ahead of that surly “gang” of “teeny-boppers” that was in Smith Park Friday.”

Even though Mr. Bell’s title was “No fathoming what’s gone wrong”; his written column is very close to telling us about the failures of parents and society that places a large emphasis on sexual gratification.

A society that begins teaching sex-education to fourth graders with all the bells and whistles; while handing out free condoms is encouraging odds of 22 against one.

A society whose adult population and police protectors ignore public drug use and alcohol consumption by children risk having more of their youth face such barbarous situations.
