July 28, 2005 Dear Green: I enjoyed reading your message, the one that pertains to the famous inedian sungazer Hira Ratan Manek being observed eating generous servings of food in a restaurant. The world knows Hira Ratan Manek as HRM, the retired Indian engineer who began sungazing and gradually discovered that he could live without eating. Apparently a team of medical doctors studied HRM and determined that he lived 411 days without consuming anything except air and water! Green, in your letter you imply that by going on so many lecture tours HRM isn't living a very "intensely yogic life." What do you mean by an "intensely yogic life"? It sounds like you're suggesting that a yogi who doesn't eat is more "intensely yogic" than Hira Ratan Manek or some other yogi who regularly dines. Furthermore, if as you say a yogi remains a hermit, and never promotes himself or herself, then how can that isolation ever promote to many persons the radiant health, calm, and joy that yoga brings to many persons? Clearly in the past many yogis have gone public. Yogananda is one example. For those who aren't familiar with sungazing, there are many websites on this subject. There are also several yahoo groups on sungazing, and Vinny Pinto's group is the largest. This group started in the fall of 2003, shortly after HRM's inedia had been promoted by many newspapers. Green, like yourself I've been reading the recent posts at Vinny's sungazing group and lots of people are disappointed with what seems to be factual evidence that HRM has started eating again. In fact people have been mocking HRM and making jokes about HRM. Just a few months ago these same people were almost addressing HRM as a saint. Now the same people call HRM a fallen angel. I recall that Meher Baba didn't talk for something like 20 years. Furthermore, as far as I know, Meher Baba wasn't a breatharian or an inedian. Many people even considered Meher Baba to be an Avatar, which is considered more respectable than merely being "intensely yogic." So what if HRM eats from time to time? He's already done what is impossible for billions of humans to do. His Indian doctors backed up this claim before HRM went public. According to many reports I have read, for 411 days Hira Ratan Manek lived without eating any food! How did HRM do that? It was also true that for a couple of years HRM had been a sungazer, but how did the doctors ever determine for certain that HRM's sungazing caused his lack of eating? The media made a big deal out of inedia, and HRM even talked up the idea that if enough people did solar yoga there would be world peace. HRM's idea is that sungazing makes a person feel so good that they don't want to eat and they are very kind and elevated in mood. If this is true, it was also true for those large numbers of sungazers who lived long before HRM came on the scene. HRM actually studied old texts to learn the method he presently teaches. So why didn't these ancient teachers bring world peace? Maybe the reason is that if people only fought over food, that idea might be plausible. Unfortunately, however, people fight over a lot more than food. Like for example, two or more men may fight over a woman and two or more women may fight over a man. Think also of the many battles fought in the law courts. Furthermore, traditional sunyoga has been around for 5000 years or more, and so a sensible person can't seriously suggest that sunyoga will ever bring world peace. The reason is because if sunyoga can bring world peace, during those 5000 years world peace would've already happened. Furthermore, when HRM gave up sungazing, he quit being a sunyogi and that's when he stopped doing what had inspired him in the first place. So now apparently HRM has gone back to eating food. This greatly weakens his claims to authority on the subject of living without eating. Nevertheless, the claim that sungazing can bring out a hidden talent and improve one's health is certainly supported by HRM's notable activities in promoting what has come to be called the HRM protocol.
