Good Thing Natalee Holloway Is/Was An American

By Judy Ramsook
July 28, 2005

What has been noted about the Natalee Holloway case that hasn’t already been discussed or written about. I’ll tell you one thing, she is fortunate to be an American. Why, you ask.

The reasons are simple. For one thing, if what occurred to her (and I hope that someday we all learn the truth behind the events that may have led to her disappearance) had happened to say a young woman from a third world country such as one of the islands there in the West Indies, the matter might have been treated differently.

Because of America’s great influence all over the world and Ms. Holloway’s family and friends’ reluctance to just give up, that is. And you don’t have to look too far to see that whenever something of a sinister nature occurs to an American especially abroad, right away, it hits the airwaves.

Then there is the undying show of support from Natalee Holloway's family and friends, and that’s one more thing. If something bad happens to an American abroad, their family and friends on the continent will make some noise about the matter. And that’s something I admire about Americans, they do not give up on their missing loved ones.

But if, as stated earlier, what happened to Natalee Holloway had occurred to a young woman from a Caribbean island, or third world country with not much international influence, maybe the case might have been handled differently. For instance, sometimes, some people are just plain difficult. Like say she went off willingly with whomever, her family in the third world nation might blame her for not being wise enough to know better.

And if she had been taken against her will, she might have still been blamed for hanging out with the wrong crowd. Sometimes you just can’t win, no matter how hard you try. Then there is something we all know as the mask. Also called ‘keeping up appearances.’ There are some people, who might be embarrassed to let the world know about their daughter’s indiscretions. These individuals might not want the story of their daughter’s disappearance on the front page of any newspaper because of that.

Shocking as it may seem, yes, there are some individuals in the world who are like that. That is why it’s a good thing Natalee Holloway is/was an American, for this is one story that will not soon fade away. And I do hope that someday we all learn the truth about what really happened to this young woman who was celebrating her high school graduation on the island of Aruba.
