Blogger Helps In Search For Missing Black Woman

By Claxton Graham
July 27, 2005

Twenty-four-year-old Latoyia Figueroa, a black woman who hails from Philadelphia, was last seen alive on July 18, when she went to the doctor with a male friend. She never arrived at the day care center to pick up her 7-year-old daughter later that day. Adding some urgency to this case is the fact that Figueroa is five months pregnant.

Philadelphia police are already at work on the case, interviewing people that knew Figueroa and trying to get a handle on where she may have gone. The FBI is also expected to bring its resources to bear on the situation. And thanks to the efforts of blogger Richard Blair, who runs The All Spin Zone, this story received some national attention, when CNN.com posted a story about Figueroa along with her picture.

Blair’s rationale for covering Figueroa’s disappearance on his site is simple: He didn’t feel like the story was getting the coverage it deserved in the media. He did something positive about it by posting information about her on his site. He is also helping the Philadelphia Citizens Crime Commission in its efforts to raise reward money. So far, $10,000 has been collected through his site, but the pot has much more room.

The comments that All Spin have received to date have been strong and positive, and span across generations and races. Blacks and whites are showing genuine concern for a young girl whose mother hasn’t made it home, and frustration for a liberal media that tends to ignore African-American women in distress. They’re hardly paranoid or simply trying to find racism everywhere they look. Like me, they understand that, in America, race still plays a part in what we see and hear in the press, and who is likely to get that press. That’s a fact of life that cannot be debunked.
