July 27, 2005 "If you like me, you like me; if you don't like me, you don't. But either way, here I am, in your face! I don't have to strive to make each reader of the Useless Knowledge Magazine to like me. But I do have an invisible person in my mind when I do write for the UK. It's a person that is sitting in front of their computer in Fairbanks, Alaska and they have a job as maybe say, a commercial fisherman. At the end of their day, they come home and get on their computer and bring up Useless Knowledge and see if I have written anything and then they respond to me. I, naturally respond back as I do with all email I get. This e-magazine allows its columnists to express our feelings, our thoughts our emotions about any subject. Be it current events or anything else our hearts desire. Not every reader or other writer can or has to agree with the word of any other columnist. And the Higher Powers know I have received my fair share of hate mail from Jeff Gordon fans over the columns of him singing at the Cubs Game. But did those same people turn around and say anything when I dealt with the charities that Mr. Jeff Gordon contributes to, like the Children's Charities he is involved with? No. When I researched that side of his life, it redeemed him in my eyes because anyone that helps children are dear to my heart. Many of my columns have been re-named to something else that has absolutely nothing to do with the meaning of the column. Does it bother me? Only slightly as long as people read the column and get the meaning of what my column is about. I live with it. For so long as people get what I am trying to convey is the true meaning. Many of the words I write, I am sure, annoys people. But does that stop me from writing what I feel and what I think? No it doesn't. Doe I let the fact that my right hand is still discolored and the knuckles get sore after a ton of writing stop me? No I don't. My words getting out to the public are more important. Do I allow the fact that I have two sons, one of which is out of school for the summer; make me pull my hair out from the fighting? No, I know how to distract one or the other to keep the fighting and the arguments down between the two of them. Or I take them to the nearest park and let them play in these large water pipes that they can run in that are more fun than sprinklers while I work on one of my other two books. Or my personal assistant, Greg, distracts them so that the fighting is at a minimum. He is a wonder with these two boys and I wouldn't give him up for anything. I can take the youngest one into my bedroom and we either work on Christmas Tree Ornaments made out of pipe cleaners or we work on his at home Pre-School that we have mail ordered him. The oldest can work on his typing on the computer or go to his friends' houses to play video games or go to the same park I mentioned before and they play in the water pipes. My favorite time of the day is of course, "Rest Time," We (My youngest and I) lay under the air conditioner in my room and watch Maury and then a movie that he picks out. Most often than not, we don't make it to the movie for falling asleep during Maury! It's funny, the older I get, the more I believe in naps. What really is my greatest joy is my oldest son supporting me on my writing and he'll ask if I have written anything while they were asleep and then he goes online to see and he reads my columns. He has even taken more chores on like helping with the laundry and helping to dry the dishes in order for me to write. He knows how important this is for me. I always tell my boys and any teenager that calls me "Mom," this bit of advice, the quitter is the one who gives up their dreams to settle for something less, but the victor is the one who keeps their eyes and their brain focused on their goal and follows through with their plans and dreams. ------------ About the author: Kaycee Nilson has completed her first novel, "Night Falls on Chicago."
