Jerry Falwell Endorses "Reparative Therapy" For Gay Children

By Robert Paul Reyes
July 27, 2005

I live in the in "the belly of the beast", my humble little house is just a few yards down the street from Jerry Falwell's Thomas Road Baptist Church.

It's my mission to combat the homophobia, hatred and prejudice that emanates from this citadel of intolerance.

I've been quoted by major newspapers, including the New York Times, but the highlight of my career was when I was quoted critiquing Jerry Falwell in the pages of the Liberty University newspaper.

Whenever Jerry Falwell makes a stupid, insensitive or ridiculous statement, I will rebut him in a public forum. And folks wonder why I write so many Jerry Falwell essays?

Pontificating at a conference of an organization promoting the notion that homosexuals can change their sexual orientation, the moral crusader from Lynchburg advocated forcing gay children into counseling designed to make them toe the straight path.

Falwell compared allowing a kid to identify as gay with allowing children to play on the interstate. Falwell is implying that a gay orientation is a dangerous thing.

Being gay is not inherently dangerous, the main danger that gays face is from blowhard preachers who incite violence against them. The most serious danger that gay children face is from religious nuts who try to force them into changing their sexual orientation.

A parent shouldn't freak out if his child identifies as gay, it's not unusual or strange for a child to realize he is gay at a very young age. When I was a young kid, I would peer down the blouse of my babysitter, I knew I was heterosexual when I was very, very young.

If Falwell is so concerned about the well being of children, he should devote his efforts into feeding hungry children. There are many hungry kids here in Lynchburg who could use his help.

Jerry, stop making absurd pronouncements, and join me in volunteering in a soup kitchen here in Lynchburg. Jerry, if you help out, you will get a free dinner.
