July 27, 2005 Two chilling facts surround the draining of the pond near the Marriott Hotel in the search for Natalee Holloway today. One is the fact that this is the first time that all the departments in Aruba, fire, police and search teams have colloborated on such a project together. If you remember, several weeks ago, a boy found a pair of panties and some used condoms in the woods and that search made big news. But, this...this is different. Different enough to be the Final Search? I remember back in the late 90's when there was a bulletin out of South Beach in Miami because authorities, acting on a tip, had surrounded a houseboat in the marina. At that time there had been a national search for Andrew Cunanan. Do you remember that? They were not saying much, but you could tell something BIG was going on by the way everyone was acting and the media's excitement about it. Sure enough, it was him. Suicide. End of story. Will today be the end of the search for Natalee Holloway? That leads to the second fact here. The authorities have told the Holloway family, "not to watch this draining of the pond," as they worked behind a fence. Those are chilling words. If I were the parent of a child and they told me to stay away from the search site after not telling me that in the past, I would be an emotional wreck in my hotel room as I waited. Part of me would be steeling myself for the final outcome, that my daughter was at the bottom of the pond. A second part of me would be praying they wouldn't find her, keeping my slim hope alive that she is not dead. The final part of me would be asking God for resolution either way and needing the courage to accept it...finally. After so much has happened in the past two months to the day that Natalee disappeared, will today be the final denoument of what has happened to this lovely girl? Ironically, if they do find her in the pond, there will be eerie similarities drawn between Natalee and Laci Peterson's final resting place. The finding of a body right next to where he said he was when his wife disappeared was fatal to Scott Peterson's defense. Will it be equally damning to Joran Van der Sloot? The biggest question I have here is one which actually makes me a little angry: If Natalee IS found today in that water...why did it take so long for the authorities to check into it? This seems it would be the most LOGICAL place to dump a body from the proximity of the Marriott Hotel beach area. Wouldn't that be one of the FIRST places the police would look? A second question that forms in my mind is how the EquuSearch team missed it, too, assuming she is there. With everyone running around talking about the ocean currents and sharks and fisherman's huts...here is a pond. A simple little body of water. Right next to the same beach where Natalee was supposedly dropped off. Duh and duh. Maybe it is just me but this case gets weirder and weirder by the day. It is not only mysterious, it is STRANGE! I will be praying for the friends and family of Natalee Holloway today. It may be a very significant date in the history of this potential tragedy. Then again, it may not. ------------ About the author: Pat Hurley has won three Emmy awards for writing, hosting and producing television shows. He resides in Southern California.
