Shawn Michaels "Shoots" On Hulk Hogan

By Eric Schomburg
July 27, 2005

As a wrestling fan, I am appalled by the lack of imagination and good taste of the World Wrestling Entertainment writers. The writers of the WWE and Vince McMahon himself have once again insulted the fans’ intelligence by making last night’s Monday Night Raw maybe THE worst RAW ever produced. I don’t care if RAW had won some stupid record for longest entertaining show on television, because quite frankly the WWE is not entertaining.

That is until Shawn Michaels came out and did a promo which looked more like a "shoot" interview. A shoot interview is when the person says what he or she feels like; in other words, it’s not scripted and it’s not apologetic. Shawn Michaels came out to Raw and "shot" Hulk Hogan, something that has been done by the likes of Vince Russo and even Vince McMahon.

To be fair to Hulk Hogan, I don’t know him nor do I know what he is like on a business level; however, Hulk Hogan has been deemed by promoters and wrestlers alike that Hogan believes that his "feces" don’t stink and that he is indeed "bigger than wrestling." If this is true than Hulk Hogan is suffering from something called denial followed with symptoms of rationalization. Hulk Hogan made professional wrestling "popular" in the 1980's, which was 20 years ago, but as a fan of actual "professional wrestling" Hulk Hogan is BS to me. While I did like Hulk Hogan as a kid, and liked him even more as "Hollywood" Hogan, Hulk Hogan became boring to me really fast. Why? Because of one thing, he was OVERRATED. How many times can you watch an old man somehow take the best shots from a younger, tougher man that could easily break him in half in real life just come back, beat the crap out of him, does a leg drop, and beat him? Hulk Hogan reminds me of cotton candy, it’s sweet at first, but too much of it and it will leave you sick to your stomach.

Not to give anything away from Hulk Hogan, there were plenty of wrestlers like him. Namely, HHH, Ric Flair, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and Goldberg; in other words, they wanted to be the top guys, and if the promoter some how defiled them, they would complain and even go so far as to threaten to quit the company while the company was making money off of them. However, Hulk Hogan was the biggest "politic" in the professional wrestling business that it made the wrestling business look fake. Yes, I said it. Fake.

Last night, Shawn Michaels expressed what appeared as his true feelings. Shawn did a shoot on Hogan, and the fans knew it. Why? Because Shawn Michaels is supposed to be a "heel" which is jargon for "a bad guy" and Shawn was getting booed week after week after he turned heel. However, there was a different atmosphere when Shawn was talking about Hulk Hogan. It didn’t feel like it was just another Shawn Michaels "I’m the Heartbreak Kid" speech. Shawn Michaels spilled the beans about Hulk Hogan and his tiresome stunts that literally made the crowd cheer for Shawn rather than boo him. Is Shawn Michaels right when he said that Hogan doesn’t care about the fans? Is Shawn right when he said that the fans gave him more and he only gave them the same dry and mediocre pose down? Maybe.

I remember when Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper had a cage match in WCW to determine who was to declare them the wrestling icon. Personally, I don’t believe either one of them is even close to being the icon of professional wrestling. Case in point, there have and could have been bigger stars than Mr. Hulk Hogan. Stone Cold Steve Austin sold more merchandise than Mr. Hogan, worked harder than Mr. Hogan, and did more than Mr. Hogan in a lesser time. Austin has retired from wrestling due to a broken neck, but Hogan is still wrestling just so fans won’t forget about him. I can’t deny what Hogan has done for the business, but that gimmick and that force could have been bestowed upon anybody. Case in point, the Rock. The Rock IS and has been a bigger wrestling and movie star than Hulk Hogan ever dreamed. I’m not a big fan of the character Rock, but I can’t deny history. Other stars in the 1980's could have been the next Hulk Hogan, but alas they were reduced to midcard status. Stars like Ricky Steamboat, Honky Tonk Man, Ted Dibiase, and Jake the Snake Roberts could have "taken the ball and ran" with the WWE/F. Luckily, Vince wasn’t totally stupid and gave the "ball" to the Macho Man Randy Savage. However, Macho wouldn’t have the belt for too long without Hogan getting it back.

I’m not sure what the outcome may be when Summerslam rolls by, but if Hogan wins than Vince has proved once again that I and the fans are right about his WWE product, it’s a bunch of s**t. I won’t buy Summerslam, because quite frankly I haven’t bought a WWE PPV since Survivor Series of 1997. Summerslam looks like crap, and it would be too expensive to buy anyway. It’s too predictable now that Shawn had said that he wouldn’t "lay down for Hulk Hogan" because I’m guessing that Shawn got the word that he was going to job to Hulk Hogan and Shawn didn’t like it. Besides, what good would the outcome be? If Shawn wins than giving Hulk Hogan one more match was a waste of time. If Hogan wins it just proves that the WWE is insulting the fans’ intelligence, not to mention making WWE wrestling fake. If there is a countout, disqualification, a run-in or anything else that jeopardizes the chances of a clear winner, than all the WWE did was screw the fans out of who would be the better man. Vince, I can book better matches than this crap. Hogan vs. Shawn could have sold millions ten years ago, but now, no one gives a s**t. Hogan’s star was dead the minute Yokozuna whipped his @$$ back in 1994.

I did like the Shawn Michaels shoot promo, Vince should have more of these on the air, because that was the ONLY entertainment that the WWE had to offer. I hope Shawn doesn’t lay down for Hogan, because Terry Bollea needs to stop thinking he’s immortal, because the knee brace says it all. You are indeed human, Hulk Hogan. You’re not the greatest persona that walked on the Earth, let alone the wrestling ring. Go back home, Hulk, before your easier than a second grade spelling test of a daughter ends up pregnant. Leave the wrestling to the wrestlers who can actually wrestle. You want a match for SummerSlam, Vince? Try Matt Hardy vs. Edge. That will get some @$$es in the seats.
