Thinkers Vs. Feelers

By James Andrews
July 26, 2005

The tedious bickering between thinker and feeler continues. The thinker looks for logic and proof. The feeler quotes an old book. It is a scenario that goes on all the time. It happens more often than I bother to read right here at Useless Knowledge. Will it ever end? Does it really matter which one is correct?

One might think that the feeler would be happy enough believing they are going to end up in their mystical paradise happy in the knowledge that the thinkers aren’t going to turn up any time soon. This writer has always been puzzled by the fact that feelers out there will yell and shout themselves blue about this one or that one going to the feelers place called Hell. Feelers shouldn’t be trying so hard to get thinkers (whom the feelers obviously hate) into mystical paradise. Wouldn’t feelers be happier in that mystical world without all those troublesome thinkers messing up the place?

Thinkers should be content thinking and exploring the wonderful world we are residing in right now. There are enough wonders to keep thinkers busy for a very long time. It is wasted time and effort bickering with people who don’t want to hear what the thinkers think because it might disrupt something in the feelers lives. If someone absolutely refuses to listen to logic, reason or facts why waste breath (or bandwidth) trying to force them into something they clearly don’t want? The thinkers should take the time and energy spent on the futile attempts to get feelers to think and use it on something really worthwhile. Channel that energy into the support of science and technology, exploring this world, working towards the ability to explore other worlds. There is so much out there if we only give up on unattainable objectives. There is a saying that ignorance is bliss, can’t that be just accepted for feelers and move on?

It would be nice if someone could blow a whistle and send both groups to neutral corners and call it a lifetime. Thinkers don’t want to blindly believe in something they can’t prove and feelers don’t feel the need to use logic or reason to think about what is really in their books. There is the philosophical question “What happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object?” The question can’t be answered in a logical world. If one were to view thinkers as the “irresistible force” and feelers as the “immovable object” the end result can only be a war of attrition.

One difficulty I see in that is the fact that both sides will have to stop trying to meddle into everyone else’s life and actually live their own lives. Thinkers will have to just accept that feelers will continue to discount critical thinking regarding things that were written too long ago to really matter today. Feelers will have to stop trying to shove their beliefs down everyone’s throat and accept that some people are just not interested in the ramblings of some ancient people. If everyone stays in their neutral corner, we might be able to finally have a chance at a peaceful world.
