July 26, 2005 I have a child I raise. This child is a good person who I have supported since birth emotionally and financially. I do it gladly and am proud of being able to watch my child grow. The father of this child is behind on child support. What is new about this picture? It happens all the time in this country a man is forced to pay the child's mother for the support of his offspring; if the father is not in the same household as the child. This also can be a mother being behind on child support if she does not have custody. Some dad's/mom's can't pay what has been accessed by a court. The man who fathered my child can not pay the Child Support balance in full. He can not pay for half of his child's medical care (and has not since the child's birth) nor provide insurance which was also apart of the court order. Am I stealing from him? Are other mother's/father's who are separated from the father/mother of their children thieves? Some would answer both of those questions with a yes. Child support was invented to give a parent who is separated help. It is expensive to raise a child. But if a parent can afford the child do they really need child support from the other parent? Yes. I use the child support I do get on toys, taking my child to the movies, new clothing and out to eat. When I am separated from the child, I send part of the child support back to the father for the child.
There are other ways to support a child other than
financial, but unfortunately this country is run on
money and the little bit of extra money for fun stuff
helps. People who collect child support aren't
thieves, they are just trying to do their best for
their children.
