If I Were President Of The United States

By Stephen Lonewolf Makama
July 26, 2005

If I were (to be) president of the United States of America... there go some you going red in the face already!

If I were (to be) president of the United States of America, I would live in a wigwam...

I came closer to that than any of you would have ever nightmare about and it happened like this - it was third grade and me and Shima, a classmate ‘discovered; a cherry tree near the dorm on the school grounds (Hillcrest school, Jos, Nigeria), so every recess during cherry season we would go stuff ourselves and our pockets with the luscious red-purple patanga cherries.

One day unfortunately we got ‘jacked’ by a dorm matron with a bowl who forced us to ‘give it up,’ we had to and I was livid because she stood there to make sure we left the area. I swore to Shima I would chop the cherry tree down... Several years later after grade five I called Shima over the phone and the first thing he said was “did you chop down the cherry tree?” and the realisation hit me like a Mack... truck, I should have! I should have! George Washington did!

If I were to be (come) president of the United States I - it would break the myth that no black, no Jew ,no woman would - could ever...

I would stop the arms race America is in with herself, I would tackle disarmament - not just the arsenals but the psychological bandoliers (most) Americans wrap around their minds... the mental defensive posturing that ‘we are the people people love to hate...’

I would normalise (or seek to) relations with the Arab world, positively engage North Korea and banter fair trade ‘negos’ with China...

I would educate (the minds of) Americans on how to learn to live in the real world (there is a non-SUV-Mcdonald humping - Mcflurry [chicken] gobbling world) out there... other people’s interest do matter also...

I would preach that might is not (never) necessarily might, I would advocate a policy of active engagement rather than that of deployment - I would iterate and re-iterate that while America’s military muscle may have achieved results in the past- today collateral damage may be a county in America, a region in America.... And that is not unacceptable... in America.

If I were to be president of the United States of America I would try to reach out to the disenfranchised many and few all across the fifty one states and the rest of the world... constituency. Really if I were to be president of the United States of America I would try to be a real good president.
