July 25, 2005 WARNING: If you are a sensitive “free thinker” you may want to avoid this column because it does contain a modicum of sarcasm that may upset your transcendental meditative state of mind. I keep telling myself I should be more considerate of atheism. I should never try to persuade any atheist to believe in God. Reading through their modern and progressive free thought, they are already the perfect in all things human. Why mess with success, right? After all, atheists have coordinated and established many more shelters for the homeless than any religious organization. They have built and managed more homes for the elderly, more hospitals and hospices, more food banks and soup kitchens than their religious counterparts. Atheists have been instrumental in being role models for today’s youth, ensuring no child falls into the trappings of faith-based programs to help adoptions of unwanted children or training programs for ex-convicts who desire to re-enter society. Yes, I suppose I have been rather harsh in my estimations of atheists. There are so many brave atheists helping the resources of Homeland Security and the United States Military. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to try to take the oath of allegiance to the United States when enlisting for these duties. I can’t imagine how terrible they must feel every time they hear a band play “God Bless America” and not really be able to participate in the joy of being part of the majority. They must really be beside themselves every time they have to pay cash for any product with American cash reading “In God We Trust”. Can any of them enjoy any sports event that begins with “The Star Spangled Banner”; knowing that the last verse reads: O thus be it ever when free-men shall stand Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation; Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: “In God is our trust!” And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! It must be a terrible thing to live in a free society with a bunch of people who just don’t understand that God does not exist and the Christian Bible is a Book of myth and superstition; full of blatant contradiction and worthless platitude. I know they believe it would be far better to live in an atheistic society much like communist China or the former Soviet Union or Castro’s Cuba; at least in those places the religious are locked away behind bars where they belong. To have begun so many charitable organizations based in humanism, only to be so underappreciated. Yes, I believe I should be much more sympathetic to their worries and their fears that Christianity may indeed turn violent and unforgiving. It is certainly something to consider for about 10 minutes or so. Now, take a deep, cleansing breath and remember; I tried to warn you. ------------ About the Author: Michael John McCrae has contributed over 400 articles to Useless-Knowledge.com.
