July 24, 2005 Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, James Kennedy, Chuck Colson, Tim LaHaye, John Hagee and other evangelical preachers regularly bash homosexuals in print and from the pulpit to raise funds. A little anti-gay thunder from the pulpit and adulterous and neglectful husbands fill the collection plates to save America from the threat that gays and lesbians pose to the sacred institution of marriage. No big deal, right? Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will never hurt us? It's harmless rhetoric, part of the shtick of a fundamentalist preacher, right? Wrong, Jerry Falwell's anti-gay venom poisons minds and inspires lunatics and hate-filled individuals to strike out against homosexuals. Testimony unfolding in a Tampa murder trail demonstrates that pandering to a congregation's homophobia can have serious and murderous consequences. Ronnie Paris Jr. thought his 3-year old son, Ronnie Paris was "soft" and told a buddy that he "didn't want him to be a sissy." The child's aunt testified that his father "was concerned that the boy might be gay." How does a 3-year old demonstrate homosexual tendencies? Was he humming Broadway tunes? Did he ask his mom for pink diapers? Did he learn how to dance before he learned how to crawl? Was his wrist to limp to hold up his toys? Did he coo in delight whenever he saw Richard Simmons on TV? Ronnie Paris Jr, wasn't going to have a pansy for a son, so he regularly boxed with him in an effort to make him a man. Ronnie would slap the toddler upside his head until he cried. A 3-year old body can only take so much physical abuse, and finally the father's cruel ministrations killed the child. Child molesters and monsters who kill children do not have any easy time in the "Big House". It would be poetic justice if Ronnie Paris Jr. is regularly sodomized in prison. As for Jerry Falwell and the rest of the fundamentalist hatemongers, there is no hope for them, but I hope that their parishioners will realize that when they fill their coffers, they are subsidizing the murder of homosexuals. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
