July 23, 2005 When you are born--no matter where or when--you are not a Catholic, Prostestant, Wiccan, Muslim, or any of their hundreds of subdivisions. You are, in fact, an atheist. You become a member of a religion because of your parents, the culture of the area where you were born, or as the result of your education or individual study. If you can dispute that thinking, show the proof, please. When I was younger (I'm 85-plus now), I seriously considered entering the ministry. I had the full backing of the church I attended, and the minister whose sermons convinced me he was truly helping people live better lives. During one of the several discussions he had privately with me, he told me I would learn (I've remembered the exact words for over 60 years) "that Jesus was just a man--perhaps the most influential man who ever lived--but just a man." That started my investigation into other areas about Christianity that might have a bearing on my desire for the ministry. I subsequently found out that no one could actually prove who wrote the Bible, and when; and that the New Testament was in all probability not even started until some 70 or 80 years after its events purportedly occurred. Further investigation revealed that I could not accept much of what was written, including the many instances where one claim or statement directly contradicts one in another part of the book. A discussion of all the problems found would require writing a full-length book. Needless to say, I reject completely the thought that one cannot live a moral life without belief in the Bible, the Koran, or any other "holy" book. That is a subject extensively written about by other authors. In summary I repeat: you and I were born atheists. ------------ Email Rod Greig: rodgreig20@cox-internet.com Tell a friend about this site! ------------ All articles are EXCLUSIVE to Useless-Knowledge.com.
