NYPD Begins Random Searches Of Commuters

By Robert Paul Reyes
July 22, 2005

A day after a series of bombs once again struck the London transportation system, the NYPD has begun random searches of New York City commuters throughout the city's subway system.

Millions of commuters with millions of backpacks, briefcases, purses and bags ride New York City's trains and buses, trying to find a bomb by randomly inspecting bags is as insane as randomly opening boxes of Cracker Jacks at the supermarket hoping to find a diamond ring.

Randomly searching bags is a violation of privacy, an inconvenience and a waste of police resources, but if the NYPD is intent on searching commuters, they should forget about random searches and concentrate on passengers who meet the profile of a terrorist.

Although the London bombers were Muslim supporters of the al Qaeda terror network, New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says the NYPD's anti-terror measures will not target any particular ethnic or religious group.

"Every certain number of people will be checked," New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly declared, "There will certainly be no racial profiling allowed."

There certainly should be racial profiling allowed, if most homicide bombers are Arab Muslims, then it makes sense for law enforcement authorities to pay closer attention to individuals who meet this profile.

When lives are at stake, it's no time to be worried about political correctness. Searching the purse of a blue-haired grandmother who was randomly picked, may be politically correct, but it's a ridiculous waste of manpower. It won't accomplish anything other than rattle a senior citizen.

If the police issue an all-points bulletin for an Hispanic bank robber with a shaved head, I wouldn't be offended if I'm pulled over by a cop. I wouldn't scream discrimination, I would understand that I happen to meet the description of the suspect.

To defeat terrorism, we need to present a united front to our enemies, we shouldn't let certain rabble rousers divide us with their spurious claims that racial profiling is inherently discriminatory.
