July 21, 2005 It's a sad day for trekkies all over the galaxy, James Doohan, who played engineer Montgomery Scott (Scotty), died at the age of 85. It seems every Star Trek episode, the exasperated Scotty would tell Captain Kirk, "she can't take any more,", but somehow the scrappy engineer would coax enough power out of the Enterprise's warp drive to escape Klingons, Romulans and other dangerous aliens. The swashbuckling, pompous Captain James T. Kirk always ended up with the girl (alien or human), but it was Scotty who always saved the day. Very few of us can identify with the handsome Captain Kirk, but most of can identify with the pudgy & scrappy Scotty who took great pride in making the Enterprise sail smoothly, where no man has gone before. We don't have to battle Klingons or Romulans, but we all have mean bosses and meddlesome neighbors who make our life difficult. If we adopt Scotty's determination and grit, we will be successful in dealing with these loathsome creatures. Doohan inspired the phrase "Beam me up, Scotty," although Capt. Kirk never issued that order until the fourth Star Trek movie. I don't believe in a Supreme Being, but I hope I'm wrong and Scotty is beamed up to the great big Starship in the sky. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
