July 21, 2005 The world used to be a (slightly) saner place. Once upon a time it was a guarantee that I would disagree with men like Alan Dershowitz, Christopher Hitchens, and Thomas Friedman. And that I would agree with Pat Buchanan, and others on the right. Pat Buchanan, who used to personify conservatism has spent the last 4 years raving about a "cabal" of Neo cons secretly trying to destroy the country. I think old Pat has started to share a hymnal with Michael Moore in the "Blame America" choir. It's gotten to the point where I barely read what he has to say anymore. Ann Coulter is another story. I still think she has something worthwhile to say. And I certainly don't think she blames America for the terrorist wars we are engaged in. Her most recent article blasts nominee John Roberts. I thought that was the lefts job. Now don't get me wrong, she might very well be right about Judge Roberts. He might be another Souter and conservatives might regret his nomination for a long time. But I would think that this President would be very sensitive about nominating another Souter, I don't think he wants to carry on the family curse. Personally I think he will be a good justice if he gets confirmed, but I admit that I could be wrong. What is interesting is what 9-11 did to some leftists. It blasted them with a jolt of common sense. Christopher Hitchens, the ex trotskyist who wrote for the Nation, has become one of the strongest defenders of the war against terrorists, and the current battle against them in Iraq. I still think of his hatred of religion to be a hangover from his days as a marxist but if thats the worst from him then I can certainly tolerate him. Remember Alan Dershowitz? He has an article on frontpagemag.com with a scathing review of the book Americans Who Tell the Truth the book lauds such men as Ralph Nader, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn and others as being the only honest men in America. At least he calls these men what they really are. Frauds. The war on terror has turned conservatives into apoligists, leftists into hawks. It's a little scary when some on the left understand that we are at war with terrorists whether we want to be or not and no amount of appeasement is going to change that. As I write this I hear that there has been more attacks on Londons subways, two weeks after the july 7th attacks. We at war and we'd better not forget it. Blaming the west will get us nowhere, running away won't save us.
