July 20, 2005 How many of you readers have had problems with the services that your wireless carriers provide? I am sure that most of you can agree that this is more the norm than just an isolated incident. And whatever happened to customer service? Nonexistent for the most part. Let me preface this by saying that I have two cellular phone accounts (one with Cingular and the other with Alltel), one wireless internet account locally, one wireless pc account with Cingular. These four accounts cost us a pretty penny each month and for that one might think we would get good service or let alone service at all, but that would be a misnomer. All have many and various problems beginning with dead zones, timeouts, or just whatever is the flavor of the moment. When you are having a problem and need someone to help out is there anyone available? NOT. I might see some of this in a more rural setting, but we are now aboard our boat in the Miami metro area where Cingular or Alltel (and every other cellular company too) stores are on about every corner. In some instances the stores are side by side, but each time you enter one of them the story is always the same. What story might that be? There is only one person that has the knowledge to fix whatever is wrong with your equipment and he or she is either out of the store or at a meeting. Yea right! The other people are polite for the most part, but merely fixtures that sell their newest components and have no idea about any problems, questions, or concerns you might have. What can we do about it? NOTHING! My latest dilemma had to do with my old (purchased three months ago) Cingular wireless pc card (to the tune of $70 per month for unlimited use) and my new laptop (arrived fresh from Dell last weekend-Inspiron 9200 laptop). My new laptop has a built in wireless connector and I can use that to connect if I want to pay 10 cents per minute since we are over our monthly contract and cannot take advantage of the new contract with unlimited minutes until August 1st. Therefore, I wanted to install my wireless Cingular card, but I need to get on line first and if you follow their (Cingular's) directions and go to the Cingular connection manager (.com) you are supposed to be able to install the card with little to no problems. Yea right! The problem is that when you connect to the internet via any other means except this darn card, they (Cingluar connection manager) ask you to insert a disk. (What disk? This $240 card comes with no disk!!!! Imagine that if you will.) So this leaves you with a catch 22. Hence, I went back to the store where I had the man install the card the first time around (can you see this coming?) and naturally he was either out of the store or at a meeting and unavailable until further notice. (You've got it!) So what do you do? Call again the next day. Then, begin this whole ring around the rosie thing all over again. ------------ About the author: Michelle Malsbury was born and raised in Champaign, Illinois.
