July 19, 2005 On August 17 the Israelis will withdraw from the Gaza strip. The only people that will cheer this event are terrorists, their supporters in the west, and those who don't pay enough attention to the facts to know what will happen. Most Israelis are against this, Sharon(who is supposed to be the ultimate right winger) has had to rely on the labor, and other leftist parties for support. This withdrawl will mean nothing but trouble, not just for Israel, but everyone in the region. With the death of Arafat it seemed the Palestinians had an opportunity. But they elected Mahmoud Abbas, and the moment passed. Abbas has proven to be an incredibly weak leader. Unable to control the terrorists and prevent them from breaking the cease fire(which was about the millionth one). Now the terrorists and their apologists will blame Israel for this. Their "logic" says that if the Israelis were not there, there would be no terrorist problem. This is, of course, absolutely absurd. There was a terrorist problem in the Gaza strip before 1967 when the Israelis took it from the Egyptians in the 6 day war. It will only get worse. Abbas is such a weak leader and the PA so corrupt that Hamas controls the Gaza strip. The Israeli withdrawl will not bring Abbas, the supposed moderate, to power and allow him to exercise any real control. The Gaza strip will become a new terrorist base of operations. Like Taliban Afghanistan was before the American attack. One of the points of the Bush Doctrine is to deny terrorists a place of sanctuary, after all that is why we took down the Taliban in Afghanistan rather than just hunting Al-Qaida and Bin Laden. Do we want to have to go into the Gaza strip next? Of course not. This can best be avoided if Sharon has a burst of common sense and calls of the withdrawl. Ehud Barak tried that several years ago when he pulled the Isreali military out of southern Lebanon. The result? A renewed uprising that has gone on ever since. Hamas will claim a victory and the situation will go from bad to worse. Let's hope that Gaza isn't the next battle in the war against the terrorists. ------------ About the author: Craig Chamberlain has written more than 100 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
