July 16, 2005 This fairy tale world in which liberals live (as described in another article) seems more reality based than it is given credit. For example, I am a liberal. I am a thinking person, with values, with beliefs, with a career, and with a very wonderful wife. The fairy tale life I live consists of getting up five to six days a week, showering, shaving, eating breakfast, and going to work. Rarely am I absent from work and rarely do I cause any havoc at work. Of course, my job might be considered the job of a liberal, but I don’t think so. I am a social worker and I work with people with mental illness (both liberals and conservatives). My wife is a nurse with very similar work habits; she’s a nurse (too liberal I suppose). Unlike the liberals described by the gentleman, who wrote that it was risky to hire liberals (what a sham), the organization that hired me tells me on occasion that I am a hard worker…hmm. If I were to hire someone, I wouldn’t care if they were conservative or liberal. Instead, I would seek out ability and qualifications. I would seek out dedication, job references, criminal history, absenteeism, and longevity. Those are the qualities we should seek. We should not even consider ideologies. In fact, in the U.S. it is illegal to hire or fire based on ideologies. Perhaps I’m not privy to statistics that HR folks have, but I don’t believe that there are any “honest” statistics out there that can show proof that liberals are bad employees. It there is information out in the information world, my guess is that it’s purely anecdotal. Now, back to this liberal-in-fairy-tale-land thing. Perhaps liberals are living a fairy tale when they say that the war in Iraq was started by deception, but I don’t think so. Perhaps they are wrong when they say poverty is a major problem in this country and that we must work together to stamp it out, but I don’t think so. Are all poor people liberals? I don’t think so. Are all drug addicts liberal? Are all alcoholics liberal? Murderers? Child molesters? Are all corporate CEOs conservative (if so…some are crooks being sentenced to prison). It seems we see the world as black or white, liberal or conservative. What about moderates? I have no statistics to back up what I believe, but I believe that much of the world consists of moderates. That is, people that have the “show me” mentality, the “prove it to me” ideology. In our discussions, we seem to forget that block of individuals that don’t see life as black or white. They actually see the grayness of the BS spewed by conservatives and liberals alike.
Before we start making statements that absolutely have no foundation, I think we should attempt to remove our heads out of our butts. In medical terminology, that might be considered a cranalanalectomy.
