The News Media Motto: If It Bleeds, It Leads

By Amanda Baker
July 16, 2005

Bombings in London rock the world press. A child molester caught after murdering a whole family. A sports team reorganizes and hires new players. A new baby is born to a celebrity. What in this paragraph does not seem important?

The news media today follows the "if it bleeds it leads" motto. Programs are interrupted for hourly coverage of an event that shocks the world. Information or no information gets repeated over and over again, till you want to just turn off the noise of the news reporter on the television.

The evening news reports on these events and adds entertainment news. Sports is entertainment. It is not important on a global level. Watching sports stats and hearing about traded players is boring.

News paper sales have fallen. Small papers are trying to compete with larger entertainment magazines. Why? Because people get news from the Internet, or watch the bottom of the T.V., while a reporter gives commentary about an event that happened. Or is it because people want their news instantly not a day later.

Is all of this news important to Amy house wife? Does she pay attention to the bleeding part or the box office receipts of the lasted Hollywood flop?

These questions have answers that a company pays focus groups to answer. I have found the a focus group does not focus on anything but what the consumer wants.

Do you pay for your news?

If not then you are "Nothing Important" to the people who dictate what you watch, read or hear.
