Harry Potter Day Canceled In England

By Robert Paul Reyes
July 14, 2005

In America we are accustomed to seeing manifestations of Christian intolerance and bigotry, but it comes as surprise to read about this sort of foolishness taking place in enlightened England.

A primary school in the United Kingdom canceled a "Harry Potter Day" over complaints by Christians it could lead children into "areas of evil". Students from The Holt Primary School in Skellingthorpe, Lincs, were planning to dress up as witches and wizards.

But the event - to mark the launch of the new Harry Potter novel- was called off after parents and a local rector complained it was a celebration of witchcraft.

When little kids dress up as witches, wizards and goblins to celebrate Halloween or the release of a new Harry Potter book, they realize it's make-believe. The wee tots have their fun letting their imagination run free, and they don't cause any problems for anyone else.

But when Christian fundamentalists indulge in their rituals, they look askance at anyone who doesn't share their views. And they create problems for atheists and adherents of other faiths who don't subscribe to their Neanderthal notions.

Myths, fables and make-believe are wonderful tools to teach children to let their imaginations soar, but adults who are enslaved by their religious myths and fables, close their minds to imagination and creativity, and end up looking like foolish children.

"When I was a child, I thought as a child, but when I became a man I put away childish things." How I wish evangelicals would put away their childish myths and join the 21st century. Unfortunately, their rigid ideology leads them to do a hell of a lot more harm than just ruin a "Harry Potter Day" for a bunch of little kids.
