Bruce S. Gordon Takes The Helm Of The NAACP

By Robert Paul Reyes
July 12, 2005

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation's oldest and most prestigious civil rights organization, but in recent years it has seen its power and influence diminished and marginalized.

Its board of directors has chosen Retired Verizon executive Bruce S. Gordon to lead the organization into the 21st century.

In the past the head of the NAACP has been a preacher or a politician, but some of these esteemed individuals have led the respected organization into near bankruptcy and irrelevancy.

The NAACP has made a wise decision, at this juncture in history, it does not need a Messiah figure with grandiose schemes, it needs a level-headed CEO who will make sure that the organization remains economically viable.

A CEO's bottom line is the economic health of his organization, hopefully Mr. Gordon will eliminate the anti-Republican rhetoric that has become a hallmark of the NAACP. This rabid partisanship drives away Republicans and moderates from joining the NAACP in its struggle to end poverty and racism.

I'm a liberal, but I was turned off by the NAACP's demonization of George W. Bush during the presidential election.

Mr. Gordon faces major challenges, but I'm confident that his background and calm demeanor will serve him well, and result in a new and invigorated NAACP.
