July 11, 2005 The trendies have their Frappuccinos, cappuccinos and vitamin-enriched smoothies, but this simple man prefers a good old-fashioned Slurpee. The slushy, colorful 7-Eleven staple turns 40 today and I hope it's still around when I'm 100-years old. Since 1965, more than 6 billion Slurpees have been sold. They're now sold in 17 countries. U.S. annual sales alone are over a $100 million. What are the magical ingredients of a Slurpee? I don't want to know, let it remain a mystery, it's my ambrosia, it's my manna from the corporate gods. Thank goodness some things never change, you can still get a gallon of milk at 7-Eleven for a zillion bucks and an ice-cold Slurpee to sate your thirst. When I was a little kid, my brother and I would run to 7-Eleven, buy Slurpees, and have a contest to see who could take the longest gulp without passing out from brain-freeze. I'm older and wiser and I no longer tempt the fates by gulping my Slurpee, but I still enjoy the wonderful concoction. I don't know if I thank heaven for 7-eleven, but I definitely am grateful for a wonderful, refreshing Slurpee. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
