July 9, 2005 Conservative religious leader Rev. Jerry Falwell credited evangelicals for putting President Bush in office in 2004 and said their focus is now on ending world hunger. Wouldn't it be wonderful to hear such a wonderful statement from the bellicose and strident Jerry Falwell? Instead of trying to eliminate world hunger, the controversial minister is now devoting his influence and substantial resources on defeating Hillary Clinton should she run in the next presidential election. "The church won the 2004 elections and don't let anyone tell you any differently," Falwell told a crowd of thousands attending the Southern Baptist Convention Pastors Conference. "Now we've got a bigger challenge ahead of us. We've got to deal with Hillary in '08,'" Falwell told the cheering mob. Thousands of Southern Baptist ministers get together and an Unholy Spirit leads them to waste their energies fighting a partisan battle, instead of pooling their resources to fight hunger, AIDS or global warming. Bono, lead singer of the rock group U2 and co-founder of DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa), is more of a "man of god" than Jerry Falwell will ever be. The rock star is using his considerable prestige and fame for a noble cause: Freeing African nations from the cumbersome burden of debt that is enslaving them to America and other world powers. Jesus Christ didn't try to overthrow the Roman authorities, he dedicated himself to healing the sick, feeding the hungry and ministering to the disenfranchised. Jerry Falwell should take a cue from Bono and Jesus Christ, forget about Hillary Clinton, and do something worthwhile with his time, treasure and talents. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
