July 7, 2005 Let all those prisoners out of Guantanamo Bay detention centers! We presume people to be innocent, until actually proven guilty here, with our legal system that was originally derived from the Northern European culture. Just because the Gitmo prisoners come from the Middle Eastern culture doesn't mean that they can be expected to behave much differently from us. Let's get some finger prints or smoking guns or something, or else let 'em all out. There must be a few innocent ones in there. Of course, if we let them out, and they blow up a few railroad tunnels or government buildings, there would be a LOT of innocent people killed, but that's a big "if." When they get out, they can't just go around buying explosives here. Of course, they do have a lot of petroleum money, and they could go to hunting equipment stores and buy lots of bullets, take out the gunpowder, and make some bombs, but that would be an awful lot of trouble for them to do. They wouldn't do THAT. And how about those Middle Eastern students who want to come here? Let 'em all in! Our professors need graduate students, so they can publish more scholarly articles. Sombody, somewhere, is just BOUND to read those articles, and become better educated. And the poor profs can't get tenure, if they can't publish a lot. Just because those students come from the Middle East doesn't mean they're going to blow up tunnels and buildings. A lot of them want to come here to study religion, and their own religious practices are probably similar to ours. After all, there have only been a very few recent beheadings of their prisoners. And, anyhow, most students are innocent young things and wouldn't hijack airplanes or such --- well, some students did that rather famously, but they wouldn't dare to do it again. Let 'em all in! ------------ About the author: Dan Shanefield is a retired engineering prof, who worked at Bell Labs and then at Rutgers University.
