The 5th Of July A Time To Reflect

By Ken Hughes
July 5, 2005

The festivities of the 4th of July have past. It’s time to go back to what we do in our everyday lives. At the end of the day, [the 4th of July] how many of use thought what this day really means. What the cost of this holiday entailed. How many lives sacrificed to assure there would be a 4th of July the following year, and all the years that follow it?

This 4th of July we have Men, Women, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Air Force, and Civilians in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, Japan, The Balkans, Europe, in practically ever corner on earth. Why are they there? To make sure we can celibate the 4th of July next year. So far it’s working.

I ask the naysayer would you prefer we celebrate a new 9/11 each year in place of the 4th of July? Al Qaeda told their followers attack America wherever, whenever possible. Osama bin Laden declared war on America. America drew a line in the sand after 9/11 saying no more. The sentiment was nearly unanimous this attack will be challenged, it will not be tolerated. Of late, the sentiment seems to be waning, there’re those among our own leaders who question the wisdom of liberating 25 million oppressed people from a murdering dictator. [One million Muslims murdered but no WMDs]

Most Americans have never experienced the knock on the door at midnight by the secret police. They’ve never experienced a foreign army marching through their villages. They’ve never experienced executions because of religious differences. The reason Americans have never experienced these things is because the spirit of the 4th of July 1775 has been kept alive and defended each time it’s been challenged.

America is without a doubt a contradiction in humanity. We’re not a nationality, tribe, religion, or any of the things that bind most countries together. We are a diverse group with little commonality. Singularly we’re a nation with little tolerance, we’re bigoted, insensitive, biased and many other clichés to numeral to mention. Jointly we’re hell on wheels, attack one of us and you attack us all.

The glue that binds America goes back beyond the War for Independence. It goes back to the signing of the Mayflower Compact 11, November 1620. Every male signature was required placed on the document before anyone could disembark the ship. It was the first step in democracy, as we know it today.

What would America be if those men of the Revolution hadn’t fought eight and a half years to secure our freedom form England, If they hadn’t taken fifteen years to write a constitution. Any of our wars especially World War One and World War Two may very well have turned out much differently if there’d been no America there to stop the worlds invaders. What will America be next year or the year after if our men and women in uniform lay down their guns and come home? Who will defend us? Will liberal negations be enough to turn the tide of terrorism? [I don’t think so.]

Who among us believes Al Gore or John Kerry could have convinced Al Qaeda to play nice and not murder any more civilians, no more car bombs, no more suicide bombers targeting civilians?

I for one and I’m positive there are thousands perhaps millions who pray everyday thanking God for the fine generation of young men and women he sent to protect us. I also pray he will instill a little more intelligence and less stupidity in some of our Liberal congressional representative.

Our friend Michael John McCrae [born of the 4th of July] wrote an article for Useless Knowledge describing what the 4th of July and America means to him, It’s must reading if your as patriotic as I am.
