July 2, 2005 One look in your eyes and there I see, Just what you mean to me Here in my heart I believe Your love is all I'll ever need Holdin' you close through the night I need you, yeah. "Here and Now" It's circa 1990, I'm in my old broken down Chevette, with a blind date, thinking that I'm never going to get past first base. Then I turn on the radio and there's Luther gently crooning "Here and Now." A look of dreaminess washes over my face (Y'all who love Luther know what I'm talking about), and my date turns to me and inquires, "You like Luther?" I respond, "Girl, you know I love Luther". It was all smooth sailing from that point on, I drove home from that first date feeling like I was driving a Ferrari. That's the power of love. That's the power of Luther Vandross. Luther was the quintessential soul singer. While his contemporaries like Prince, where belting out songs like "Let's pretend we're married and f*** all night", Luther preferred singing about love and romance. Others spoke to the groin, Luther spoke to the heart. "I'm more into poetry and metaphor, and I would much rather imply something rather than to blatantly state it. You blatantly state stuff sometimes when you can't think of a poetic way to say it." Luther understood that love is nuance and poetry, not coarseness and profanity. Love is defined by a look in the eyes, not by an exhibition of sexual gymnastics. Today the radio is full of explicit love songs that don't do anything to get me into the mood, thank goodness for my collection of Luther Vandross CDs. Luther Vandross died yesterday at the age of 54, but his songs and the power of love that he so eloquently crooned about will live forever. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
