July 1, 2005 People will do all sorts of strange, dangerous and ridiculous things for money. Kari Smith had her forehead tattooed with the Web address of a gambling site. For a measly $10,000 she surrendered her dignity and self-respect. I will not give the online casino any additional publicity by naming it. Smith, 30, who sold advertising space on her forehead on eBay, said the tidy little sum will give her 11-year-old son a private education, which she believes he needs after doing very poorly in school. Smith is providing an education for her child, she is illustrating the sad fact that some misguided souls will debase themselves for a few lousy bucks. If Smith truly cared about her son she would not have exposed him to shame and ridicule. The late night comics are having a field day with Smith's unwise decision to make herself a walking billboard. A spokesperson for the online casino said skin is not an unusual spot for the casino to advertise: It already has another forehead, more than 100 arms, legs, chests and backs. It's appropriate that a casino tattoo their logo on a person's forehead, it perfectly symbolizes that too many patrons of gambling establishments become slaves to their addiction. Smith is still young enough to pursue a higher education, make a better living and be able to take care for all the needs of her son. Instead of selling her soul to a casino, she should have enrolled in a community college. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
