Life With An Expectant Grandfather

By Lee Zelhart
Jan. 31, 2005

Well, it's true. While the circumstances could be better it looks like not only do I have a book due out this year, but my daughter is also expecting her first addition. In otherwords...I'm going to be a grandpa.

As with her engagement last October she snuck this in on me. She knocked on my bedroom door one morning. Dad, I need to talk to you.(uh oh).Okay, come on in.

She sat down on the bed as I sat up. Dad, I need you to look at me. Okay, so I looked at her. Several minutes later...Okay, I don't see any Secret Service outside so I'm guessing you didn't kill the president and you're going to tell me you're going to have a baby, right? A nod to the affirmative.

Okay, well great. There's a couple of spare rooms here you can make into a nursery upstairs. Your brother's room(he never sleeps in it as when he's home he sleeps on the couch for some reason), or there's the room across from yours which is unused and either one get good sun exposure.

My son's room has a south facing window. Should be pretty warm. The other room has east facing windows and would be nice in the mornings. She thought that was nice and said so.

So, when are we looking at? September, or October. We since got a due date from the doctor about September 14. She's about seven weeks right now.

So, I'm pretty happy for the most part. The baby's father is happy. My daughter...well, you know how that goes. She's had too much morning sickness to be anything right now except miserable. I've tried to be supportive. I went with her and her fiance' to the first doctor's visit. I'm looking at baby stuff on the net.

She's also bought the baby it's first outfit. She found a set with an outfit, a bottle, a rattle, and etc. with St.Louis Cardinals logo on everything.(good girl, Holly, way to go!)Grandpa can take the little darlin' to Busch Stadium in style. Well, maybe not. By the time baseball season starts next year it'll be about six, or seven months old.

I only had one question. Why didn't you come right out and tell me? Well, she answered, I don't know if you're aware of this, Dad, but you can sometimes be a little intimidating.(Me, at 6'5" and 268 lbs.? Intimidating? I'm a friendly neighborhood fuzzball)Okay, I guess I am first thing in the morning.

She got up to leave the room. Holly? Yeah? Why did you think I told you be careful when you went over to Patrick's? I thought so I'd be safe on the road. No, though that was part of it. I just know how it is to be young and in love. You gotta remember...I've known you all your life and you can't keep secrets from me. She smiled. Yeah, Dad, I know...why do you think I took so long to say something? I knew you would figure it out. That's my daughter!
