Jan. 29, 2005 No one knows us better than the people with whom we communicate, be they friends, co workers, family members and those familiar strangers we happen to make eye contact with say down at the local mall or department store. But when is an acquaintance just that, can we refer to an acquaintance as a friend? Not really. The reason? Friendship requires time, first of all, time to get to know each other, time to communicate whether by telephone, internet, text messages or in person. And what might encourage one to become friends with someone else? Solidarity and or compatibility. Say for example you like listening to the same type of music as a person you just met, that could be grounds for similar taste in something. Or another interest such as reading, say you both like books by the same author like 'Agatha Christie.' As for solidarity, what if you are out and about when you are suddenly faced with an unexpected situation, say in a store that is being robbed. And say the person who is hiding next to you in the same aisle from the robber happens to be an off duty police officer. Say he eventually nabs the culprit, thus saving the day, not only for the store's manager and the employees, but also you from being victimised by the attacker. So when next you happen to think about your friends, be grateful that you have them, for they have taken the time to spend with you just as you have with them. And in a world that is constantly demanding our time and attention, also make some time for the friend who also needs an ear or some advice about a certain matter. Your time is valuable to this person whether you know it or not, for he/she needs you even when you think they do not. For one of the benefits of having a friend, is to be one. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
