Charles Bronson: Action Hero For The Ages

By Robert Paul Reyes
Jan. 29, 2005

Charles Bronson, the grim-faced tough guy who starred in action films including the "Death Wish" series, died a couple of years ago.

Arnold Schwarzenegger may have been The Last Action Hero, but Bronson was the original action hero. Bronson didn't utter any cute or catchy lines after dispatching a bad guy. He was a good guy going about his business of blowing away the bad guys -- not a movie star winking at the audience.

Bronson did not have the good looks of a Marlon Brando or James Dean; he had the roughhewn face of a character actor that became a mega-star by taking the bull by the horns.

Bronson never felt a need to get in touch with his feminine side by appearing in a film like Kindergarten Cop; his stock-in-trade was killing the bad guys and he starred only in action movies.

In the Death Wish movies Bronson was a one man vigilante army ridding the city of the scum and vermin that preyed on the weak and defenseless. Bronson's Death Wish character had no sympathy for the criminals that he killed. He never expressed any regrets for dispatching scores of evildoers straight to hell. He was a minimalist killer who was in intimate terms with only one emotion: Revenge.

Most of us may have decried the nihilist violence of Bronson's movies, but in the darkness of the movie theater every woman who was ever raped, every kid who was beat up by a bully, every man who was ever mugged or robbed, smiled with intense satisfaction every time that Bronson killed a cretin.

In a world where everyone loves each other and no one locks there doors there is no need for a Bronson in films or in real life, but we don't live in such a wonderful world. I hope there's a few Bronsons in our elite forces as they search for Bin Laden and his cronies.
