Jan. 29, 2005 I’ve been thinking a lot lately after listening to Congresspersons Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, Teddy [the lady killer] Kennedy, Maxine Waters, [The list goes on.] They have little good to say about America, I on the other hand have little bad to say. My America is the land of opportunity, prosperity, and freedom. Most will note these congresspersons aren’t lacking in the fineries this country offers them. Each seems to be well tailored and well manicured. I know the congress has its own personal barbershop, I wonder if they have their own beauticians as well; those women need the help. However, why wouldn’t they, they have the power? I frequently take a mental trip around this great country starting with the [Currier and Ives] countryside’s of New England. Up state New York with it’s vineyards and quaint villages. New York City, there’s no place like it on earth. Once you learn to accept New Yorkers, they are magnificent people. I recall as a young man in my early 20’s standing on the deck of a ship looking at the New York City sky-line and Lady Liberty for the first time. Its an experience I’ve never forgotten, I doubt I ever will. I’m frequently asked what my favorite part of the country is. There’s no answer, each state, region, area, valley stream, street corner are unique unto themselves. A sunrise at the Grand Canyon can’t be duplicated. A sunset at Key West can only be seen in Key West, nowhere else on earth. The sun coming up behind the Teton Peaks of Wyoming is an artist’s dream. Where in the world can we stand on the banks of a river half mile wide few feet deep with water so clear we can see trout swimming around? I’ve seen it in he Snake River in Idaho. A hundred or so miles down stream, that same river is feed by a thousand springs coming out of a sheer bluff above the river over a mile long. Salt flats consisting of pure salt cover nearly one quarter of the state of Utah. Portland Oregon has the distinction of being one of the few cities with in a few hours of snow skiing and sunning on a sandy ocean beach in the same weekend. In Northern California, there are trees cars can be driven through. One tree even has a gift shop inside. This country of ours is so spectacular no one person could possibly document its beauty in any one article. I know I’ve omitted hundreds of Americans places and things worth mentioning. I’ve been very fortunate to have been in 49 of the 50 states [the other I flew over and saw parts of it] I know without any doubt I’ve misses much of what each state had to offer. America offers so much I question the loyalty of those politicians who complain about it. For those who question the existence of a God need only walk outside and look around. Man could never create a Grand Canyon, The Mississippi River. The Teton Peaks, The wonders of Yellowstone Park, Niagara Falls or any of the thousand wonders of America. [I take that back Teddy did manage to get a basement dug under Boston at taxpayers expense] Man claims inventive right to all things God put on earth for man to play with. God must be a very temperate sole to put up with the crap that’s thrown at him / her or it and then gives us more blessings to enjoy each day. If my choice who to follow is a Liberal politician of God, I’ll take God every time. ------------ About the author: Ken Hughes is prone to grammatical error and occasional misspelled words.
