Jan. 27, 2005 It's not easy being a cop. He arms himself with a sidearm, a cup of coffee and a donut or two and hits the streets. Mostly, he works at night when the predators roam. Mostly, he drives around looking for trouble -- and usually finding it. He's a cabbie picking up fares who don't pay, don't tip, don't speak the King's English and don't believe in hygiene, but at least they are all going to the same destination -- the hoosegow. "The freaks come out at night," is not just a lyric from some forgotten song to him -- it's real life. He knows the drug dealers by their thuggish swagger and he knows the hookers by their scars and their come hither scowls. It's not easy being a cop. He sees civilization without its veneer of comforting small talk and wrinkle-proof attire. It's not easy being a cop. He walks the tightrope between civilization and anarchy. He may think that nobody appreciates his efforts, but there are many of us who appreciate his artistry and courage. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
