Jan. 27, 2005 "As iron is eaten by rust, so are the envious consumed by envy"- Antisthenes. So here we are, all of reaching for the same goal; success in whatever form it comes, be it financial, selling a piece of art or acquiring the perfect mate with unmatched physical attributes and personality traits that seem ideal for you. In the eighties hit single by 'Rick Springfield,' for example, the character in the song, "Jessie's Girl" is pondering having his friend's, 'Jessie's Girl.' But as he ponders, he seems to have developed an envy for the friend, when he takes things a step further by stating that he wants not a girl like 'Jessie's Girl' but the real thing, 'Jessie's Girl' herself. He even wonders if she will desire him even though he seems to have reservations about the matter when he says: "...And I'm looking in the mirror all the time, wondering what she'll see in me..." Is it envy that propels us to progress further into this race that is life, now do not get me wrong, there is nothing amiss about wanting better things, but has envy become the motivation? If say your one of your friends has just landed the ideal mate, will you want to end the relationship you currently have so you too can be free to pursue another, more attractive potential love interest? Thought provoking as it may seem, we might all know of someone who has done just that, but while you aspire for the next best thing, however difficult it may be to obtain, ask yourself this, why am I doing this, and will that ultimately make me happier than I am right now? For you have to be content with yourself before you can seek out someone else you think will make you happy, even if she happens to be "Jessie's Girl." ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
