Jan. 26, 2005 Any smart philosopher should immediately notice that the title to this article is an oxymoron. That's because anything "suprnatural" is by definition above and beyond the natural world. Since it is not subject to the Laws of Nature it cannot be said to exist. More succinctly, it cannot be proven to exist. The problem is that it cannot be proven to not exist either. So, we have a standoff, a veritable stalemate. Since we cannot prove or disprove the existence of anything supernatural, we are left with our faulty belief system and meager human assumptions to satisfy our compelling curiosity. More to the point, we are left to wonder about any supernatural phenomena or beings or entities or other things we can imagine. This includes God. Since God is "supernatural" he cannot be proven to exist. He cannot be proven to not exist either, but neither can fairies, elves, ghosts, angels, demons or even Santa Claus. That's because you can't do experiments on God in a laboratory. The best way to determine the existence of anything is to sample its constituents. In other words, what is it made of? But if we ask, "What is God made of?" we are left without an answer. Since he is supernatural we cannot get a sample from him. We can't test his DNA or determine his genetic makeup. The same is true of Santa Claus. We don't know what he is made of. Where does this leave us? If God is made of nothing, then, obviously he doesn't exist. If he is made of something then he is not God because all matter is subject to natural and physical laws and if God is subject to natural and physical laws he cannot be God because he cannot be all-powerful if he has no power over natural laws. Since the existence of God cannot be proven, we must assume he doesn't exist. But it also means that a huge list of other beings do not exist either. There's Thor, Zeus, Apollo, Ra, Woden, Io, Brahma, Pele and an entire host of other ancient deities. It also includes angels, demons, fairies, elves, ghosts and Santa Claus. Since they are all supernatural, we can't prove they don't exist. But, if we ever prove God exists, these creatures will be found to exist also. And that is strong evidence for the prevalence of nonsense in the universe. Comment Box 4 = I am an artist, musician, teacher, writer and I love the outdoors.
