Jan. 26, 2005 “The body is a temple.” Have you “resolved” to live better in 2005? To diet? To stress less? To stop smoking? To buy bottled water? To exercise? To leave your louse of a spouse? Here’s another health tip to add to the list to lengthen your life: avoid toxic people! I am often amazed how people go to great lengths to avoid pork, to drink in moderation, to walk daily, to take antioxidants, yet overlook the damaging effects of toxic people. For the record, toxic people can come in all shapes, sizes and colors. These culprits can be co-workers, neighbors, family members, or friends. The one thing they have in common, is their ability to make you sick if overly exposed. Toxic people (as the name implies), are like spiritual parasites that feed off of other people’s happiness and suck up their joy. These folks can find something bad to say about a child’s innocence, the beauty of a sunrise, God’s goodness, or Martha Stewart’s garden! They lack humor, hope, and a sense of objectivity. Often times they are bitter and “baggage filled.” And, as the expression goes-- “Misery loves company.” Here’s a lineup of who they are and the havoc they wreak! 1. GERTRUDE THE GOSSIP- Gertrude always knows somebody, who knows somebody, who knows somebody, who knows about the office affair your husband is about to have, your neighbor’s boob job, or the recent dirt on the P.T.A. moms. She never has anything of real value to share. And once the ramblings have ended, you’re guaranteed an “Excedrin day.” 2. NEGATIVE NELLIE- Her prospects of gloom and doom are infectious. She’s the one to point out why you shouldn’t start your own business, or go back to school, or trust men, or tithe. She reminds you of where you came from, and what you lack. She’s had a few bad breaks in life that have clouded her perspective and tainted her disposition. 3. JEALOUS JOAN- She masquerades as a “concerned” friend. Truth is, she suffers from low self- esteem and envies all that you have, and all that you stand for. Be careful that she doesn’t sabotage your future job, your future relationship, or your future bill of health. Toxic People are taxing. In small doses they are tolerable. But one thing’s for certain. Like fat backs and pig feet, they’ll eventually kill ya’! ------------ About the author: Jennifer Brown Banks is an award-winning poet and popular feature writer.
