The PublishAmerica Acne Pimple Has Burst

By Argile Stox
Jan. 25, 2005

There is an old Midwest saying: "That is very deep, and has a lot of water in it."

Now that the PublishAmerica acne pimple has burst and all of the huffing and puffing has subsided, my thoughts are as follows:

For those who are a proponent of "boycotting" PublishAmerica, I say, Phooey! The book buying public is not interested in the politics of the publishing arena. They are more interested in literature and a "good read".

Buy a CD for $15.99, listen to it for a few months, use it as a coaster and / or a pizza pie cutter, a few years later. Books, are forever.

If the intention is to starve a mind of thought provoking intellectual stimulation and feast on mindless video games, Fox News, Conservative Right-Wing bantering, endless Television Situation Comedies, rehashed and tired Movie Industry offerings - By all means, suit yourself, and be remanded to the dark cellar of passivity.

If the intention is to exercise your imagination, mind and eyes, learn from other individuals experiences, and become more socially aware - By all means, buy a book to read, any book, from any publisher!

Do not punish those who have invested their time, intellectual intestinal fortitude, sweat, hopes, desires, and dreams to become a published author.

I ask you, who the heck cares about the past, present, and future political ramifications of a publishing company? The author's / other publishing houses will decide, from their own experiences, who will publish the next book.

It is the end-user and the performance of the final product offered, which will have the most long lasting impact.

If you own an Indian Motorcycle and have enjoyed every moment of the riding experience, you may be sad that the company has long since gone out of existence - overtaken by the success of Harley Motorcycle Company.

However, you OWN the machine, and derive pleasure each time the key is turned, and the motor springs to life.

The same applies to books and authors. Long since dead authors and the books that were produced by publishing companies which have folded, are still traded among individuals in the marketplace.

It is not about the publishing company, it is about the author, the work produced by the author, and the enjoyment from reading the words, sentences, and thoughts created by the author.

Will everyone please shift the focus away from the current brew-ha-ha concerning PublishAmerica - already!? Geez!!!

If an individual has the desire to influence and have an enormous an impact on the book buying public at large, and change the current mentality of the publishing industry - READ AND COMMENT ON THE BOOKS THAT YOU HAVE ACTUALLY READ! Yeah, go ahead. Write a letter to Ford and tell them how horrible the Edsel was / is. Go even further. Duplicate the findings of Consumer Reports concerning the death-trap Corvair.

Guess what? Who cares? There are individuals who cherish their classic, publicly shunned, immanent death, drain the bank account repairs, deal with the devil, automobiles.

Same applies to books and authors. Individuals exercise opinions with their wallets. Word of Mouth will always apply in the success of failure of an author and / or books.

Get off the high horse in which your butt is currently resting, and buy a book to read, write a review, and optimize the gray matter which is housed neatly in the skull.

Guess what! You maybe be verbally shunned, stoned, and hung for your opinions. Are you ready for that? Ready to start a War, and defend uninformed, convoluted, and dated opinions?

Better yet, spend some time in Cuba, Russia, China, or other countries which imprison, torture, and kill authors who dare to express their thoughts in writing. Newspaper accounts of these actions abound, concerning countries which destroy publishing houses for producing those works.

Get a grip! The United States of America was built on the shoulders of authors who dared to question and challenge other individuals and the establishment. Some of their writings and the work produced by their publishing houses, left much to be desired. In fact, the type-set, printing quality at the time, was "from hunger"!

Yet, the author's thoughts were transmitted to those who were interested. The publishing house was not the issue. The focus was on the author.

I dare. No, I Double Dog Dare each and everyone who are reading my words, transmitted through this electronic medium, to buy at least one random book from PublishAmerica.

Submit an unbiased review in this forum. Rip the author, subject matter and publisher apart - if that is your objective.

I will project this outcome. There will be at least one person who will be filled with curiosity regarding the derogatory review. That person will then buy the same book to duplicate the findings.

Guess what? Everyone Wins! The author wins, for the book is read. The publisher wins, for the next reviewer may overlook the flaws, and actually review the subject matter. Everyone makes money!

Take a look around your living space. How many books does the bookcase house? When was the last time a current work by an unknown author was placed on the dusty shelf?

I will concede that there are many avid readers and accomplished author's who view this column. However, there are just as many "haven't picked up a book in decades, and were never published" individuals, who spew their criticisms, as well.

For the last time, people! The focus must be placed on the author, and the substance of the work produced.

Publishing houses come and go. Controversies begin and end. However, author's live on through their words.

Phooey, To All Naysayer's. Take a hike, all those critical author wannabe's. Got manuscript to offer? Tried getting published, lately?
