Publish Or Perish! (Why I Chose PublishAmerica)

By Jennifer Brown Banks
Jan. 25, 2005

Okay, so I’ve heard the good, the bad, and the ugly. Did my homework. Deliberated. Did the math, and still decided to sign on the dotted line.

But please don’t be confused. I’m not. And I am also not a no-talent loser looking to have my work printed to give me validation.

I am a successful, seasoned writer with publishing credits that include Simon and Schuster, Writingfordollars.com, True Poet Magazine, Empowermag.com, and a slew of others. In fact, I have a regular paying gig as a feature writer for a popular, national magazine.

PublishAmerica’s authors, much like those represented on this web site, range anywhere from great to “you gotta’ be kiddin’ me!” Don’t paint us all with the same brush.

I personally decided to have them produce my work because I believe it has merit and deserves an audience. Poetry, (unlike other genres of writing) is extremely difficult to get published via the traditional publishing route. That is, unless you’re Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni or Alice Walker. In fact, you’ll find more books by dead authors than those of us living. Don’t believe me? Next time you’re at your local bookstore, browse the titles.

Is it impossible to have poetry commercially published? Certainly not. There are exceptions to every rule. But the chances are as slim as winning the lottery, and frankly I’m not big on long shots.

Would I do it again? Would I recommend P.A. to aspiring authors? The verdict is still out. My book is in production, due to be released in March, 2005.

Financially speaking, I’ll be out at least 30 bucks for this project, minimally, for copyrights.

And thirty bucks ain’t bad for 15 minutes of fame! I’ll keep you posted.
