Jan. 21, 2005 FAMILY- “Any group of persons closely related by blood or marriage.” --Webster One of the cool things about sharing DNA with someone, is that it links us forever, in spiritual and emotional ways. We bond because we share blood, share the same history. And if we’re lucky, share the same desire for the other’s happiness and well being. That’s the way it’s supposed to work. Right? But, how does one deal with a defiant daughter? A “distant” aunt who is not distant enough? A brother who’s a bother? A sister who’s unkind and uncompromising? A fierce father? A mother who never nurtures? How does one overcome backbiting and scorekeeping and other ugly, unspeakable family traditions? How can we be strong enough to survive a country at war, when we are at war within our own ranks, our own homes? Why does it take a tragedy, a loss, or an act of God to bring us together? To bring us to our senses. Before it’s too late, let’s love and unite! TODAY’S FAMILY (A poem of possibilities) How come we ain’t like the Cleavers- Remember Leave it to Beaver? Or the Huxtables either Or even the Brady’s Or folks that lived Back in Mayberry How come there’s bad blood? And misunderstandings amidst our love More harsh words than hugs How come we can’t get it together? Agree to disagree peacefully How come we kin, but ain’t always friends? Why we keep having the same issues Again and again? How come there’s always a “black sheep”?
