How To Send And Receive Email

By Judy Ramsook
Jan. 19, 2005

Before I became computer literate, setting up an email account, sending, receiving and opening those electronic letters were stressful until I became accustomed to using the service, then it became exciting. This is for beginners, for most of you perusing this piece already know how to do all of these things.

First there is the business of setting up an email account, and today there are many different companies from which to choose for this. Some are free, some not. At first I was not certain I would have anyone to email, because then, I communicated with friends and loved ones via telephone, so I chose hotmail.

After choosing an email company, then there is the business of choosing an email prefix such as mailgirl@... and this can be exciting, for it can be anything you choose, like a combination of letters and numbers or simply your own name, initials and so on. After that, you also have to select a password; this will allow only you to access your email, especially if you are logging on from someone else's or a public computer, such as you will find in a library or internet cafe.

With this accomplished, now you are truly enthusiastic, for now that you have your email account ready for use, you can't wait to send your first email to someone.

So, now that you are ready try this, open up your outlook express or email programme window. If you are using outlook express, click on 'create a new mail message.' If you are using hotmail or any other email programme, then click on 'new' or 'new mail.'

In the space to the right of the 'To:' word type in the recepient's email address, after this, go three boxes down to the subject line or box and insert whatever you like such as 'hello whatever the recepient's name is and so on.' Then in the message box below this, you can now type in your communication. When you are through with this, and you are ready to send it, so go to the top left portion of your screen and click on the 'send' button. A couple of seconds later, (or it may take longer depending on what type of internet connection you have) a message saying your email has been sent will display. Congratulate yourself, for you have just written and sent your first email.

So waiting for your first email, you keep checking your account, and it finally does arrive. Now you have to open it, so here you go. Simply click on the sender's name and voila, your email is open for you to read and enjoy. I just wish I had someone to teach me all of the above when I got my first computer, so this is for all you new computer users out there, enjoy.
