Jan. 16, 2005 With the disappointing, in my opinion, of Grand Theft Auto Sand Andreas, it would seem that a GTA style game would be the last thing I buy. However, I kept seeing commercial after commercial after commercial of this new military game called Mercenaries: Playground Of Destruction. A mercenary is a soldier for hire, in other words, a soldier who serves for a foreign leader for money. Mercenaries is a video game which uses GTA style with militant violence. You choose from three main characters that fit your liking. Each character has his or her own prologue to the story, but the outcome through the game is somewhat the same. I was skeptical about the game at first when I saw the label being teen; however, Mercenaries is just proof that a video game doesn’t need blood to make a violent game fun. In my opinion, Mercenaries is the game that GTA San Andreas should have been. The story of Mercenaries is an interesting one; a war in North Korea occurs and while China, Russia, South Korea, and the Allied nations (Britain and United States), is involved in their fight with North Korea, a mercenary is called in for this war. The atmosphere is eerie while playing Mercenaries. The graphics of the game are amazing, a combination of orange, grey, and black seem to make North Korea into a post apocalyptic nightmare; in other words it’s almost as if you were literally dropped into hell itself for a war against North Korea. An interesting notion for Mercenaries is the familiarity with another war, the war in Iraq. For starters, your North Korean enemies are labeled in a deck of 52 playing cards, sound familiar? Weapons of mass destruction are obviously found in North Korea; maybe Bush should look there. And the female mercenary was in the war against Iraq. Regarding the feel of Mercenaries, when you are on foot it feels like Metal Gear Solid; however, when you hijack a vehicle the feel is obviously Grand Theft Auto style. While some hardcore GTA fans would cry blasphemy against Mercenaries, most fans of video games, praise LucasArts for making Mercenaries a free roam game in which you can destroy your enemies either by your own agenda, or by a mission. While it seems a little disappointing that blood is not included in this game, Mercenaries redeems itself by putting in what I consider is THE BEST part of the entire game experience, the ability to blow up a building. Not only can you blow a building up, it STAYS blown up. I figure that if I blew up a building that I would drive around and POOF the building would be in one piece again; however, to my surprise, it stayed in its destroyed state where I left it. The details of a destroyed building are phenomenal, from the black remains of the windows, to the smokey soot that remains inside the building. If you ever think about buying Mercenaries, the destruction itself is enough for the price of the game, because I can honestly say that blowing up cars in GTA has past its prime, even though you can blow up cars in Mercenaries, but once you have the opportunity to witness a building falling down in a blaze of gory (not a typo) and realize you caused that building to be destroyed, you will forget about GTA. I am very impressed with Mercenaries, and quite surprised at how Mercenaries pulls off what GTA couldn’t. While some may think that GTA is still a good game, and it is, I believe that Rockstar’s latest GTA was a horrible game, and one way to get rid of that awful aftertaste that is San Andreas, buy Mercenaries. Look on the bright side you won’t have to hear Andy Dick talk about vegetables in this game. ------------ About the author Eric Schomburg: Useless-Knowledge Columnist of the year 2004.
