Jan. 16, 2005 Dan Rather is leaving CBS's Wednesday Night "60 Minutes II" AND his anchor spot on the CBS Evening News! He SAYS it's because he's 76 years old and it's time to retire. The truth is, his lying and exaggerations finally caught up to him and he's embarassed his "news" department for the last time....finally! After a career fraught with liberal bias in his reportage, Mr. Rather got caught with his hand in the cookie jar, so to speak, for about the umpteenth time (although THIS time, it was obvious to any computer-literate 4th grader) and it finally ruined an already-tainted reputation for coloring "news" in a manner that was calculated to be the least favorable to conservatives in general, and Republican Presidents in particular. Dan Rather obviously relished the scandals of the Nixon administration and seemed to "report" each new revelation with ill-concealed glee. It may be the reason that he was chosen to succeed Walter Cronkite upon his retirement, since Cronkite was famous for coloring his reports to reflect leftist ideologies. Who can forget his calling the Tet Offensive a "victory" for the VC, despite the fact that the VC lost every battle, lost about 40% of its personnel and equipment, failed to generate the anticipated "popular uprising" and didn't hold a single village or town for more than about 36 hours before being driven out? Yes, Dan Rather was the logical choice to succeed Mr. Cronkite. Both, it seems, had a penchant for making up stories out of whole cloth or interpreting "facts" in fictitious ways. Rather's sniping and derision of continual delays in the launch of the Challenger may even have contributed to NASA's decision to go ahead with an ill-conceived launch that resulted in the disaster with which we're all familiar. He tried to sandbag President George H.W. Bush in an interview during the 1988 campaign by implying that he (President Bush) was part and parcel of a conspiracy during the Reagan campaign in 1980 to delay the release of the Iran hostages until after the election. Despite no evidence of any such conspiracy, Rather hammered the issue over and over until then-VP Bush told Rather that he was essentially an idiot and that he (VP Bush) had already answered the question several times and Rather could either accept his answer or stuff it. Undeterred, Rather conducted an obsequeous "interview" of Saddam Hussein during which he implied that Saddam's WMD's (which were KNOWN to exist in Iraq at that time) had been supplied by the Reagan administration. The truth was, while we "supported" Saddam in his war with Iran during the 80's, that support took the form of food shipments to Saddam's nearly- starving people and intel-sharing...NOT with military equipment. The story was a lie and Mr. Rather knew it when he conducted that interview. It was merely part and parcel of his well-established anti-Republican, if not anti- American, reporting throughout his career. Mr. Rather STILL believes that his hit-piece last September on President G.W. Bush, was "truthful"...even if it could be proven that the supporting documents were patent forgeries! With that sort of attitude, his departure is long overdue and welcome. As conservatives have maintained for several decades, the so- called "mainstream news" organizations ARE, in fact, biased leftward and, as we're learning every day, those with a leftward bias think nothing whatsoever is wrong with lying or cheating if the left's agenda is advanced in the process. Teddy Kennedy, just this past week, in a speech made the statement that President Bush, "Wants to destroy Social Security and reduce Social Security benefits for all seniors"--an obvious lie, but one calculated to scare seniors into supporting Democrats. That story was dutifully reported in the Mainstream Media without challenge as to its accuracy. Rather's organization was particularly non-critical of Sen. Kennedy's blatant lie. So, Mr. Rather is leaving us. About 30 years too late, if you ask me. ------------ About the author: David A.
