Jan. 12, 2005 America’s fascination with the private lives of stars really puzzles and perturbs me. To all you groupies out there, no offense intended. I think Jennifer Aniston is a terrific actress; I am a big fan. And, I admit, I cried on the final episode of “Friends.” And Brad Pitt, (hunk that he is), well, that’s a different article all together. Having read the particulars plastered via daily headlines, I’m truly sorry for the demise of these fine folks’ fairy-tale union. But enough already! I do not care about the intimate details of their relationship! Or Jen and Ben’s, or Tom and Nicole’s, or Bobby and Whitney’s , or Star and Al’s, or Tom and Penelope’s. I’m more interested in Tom and Jerry’s! Honestly speaking, I have enough to manage with my own heart-break series. MEANTIME, THESE ARE THE THINGS WHICH CONCERN ME: 1. THAT MY MUSE AND MY METABOLISM HAVE BECOME DEFIANT. 2. THAT GOSSIP IS REPLACING STIMULATING CONVERSATION. 3. THAT REALITY T.V. RARELY RESEMBLES REALITY. 4. THAT IN ONE OF THE MOST AFFLUENT AND ADVANCED COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD, WE CAN’T END HOMELESSNESS. 5. THAT METAL DETECTORS ARE RELACING PRAYER IN SCHOOLS. 6. THAT CHIVALRY IS NOT PRACTICED MORE OFTEN. 7. THAT BOSTON PUBLIC IS NO LONGER BEING AIRED. 8. THAT IT’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND FITTING JEANS FOR THOSE OF US WITH SMALL WAISTS AND BIG BOTTOMS. 9. THAT SPANDEX IS BEING WORN IN PUBLIC BY WOMEN OVER 18 AND OVER SIZE 18. 10. THAT TEACHERS ARE PAID POVERTY WAGES WHILE ATHLETES RECEIVE KING’S RICHES. 11. THAT MY PUBLISHERS CAN’T SEEM TO PAY ME ON TIME. 12. THAT NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE RECOGNIZE THE VALUE OF GOOD HABITS AND GOOD JUDGEMENT. 13. THAT TOO MANY YOUTH LACK RESPECT AND WILLING ROLE MODELS. 14. THAT MEN MISTAKENLY BELIEVE THAT “NICE GUYS FINISH LAST.” 15. THAT HALLE BERRY IS RUMORED TO BE DATING MICHAEL EALY (WHICH GOES TO PROVE ALL THE GOOD MEN ARE ALWAYS TAKEN!) ------------ About the author: Jennifer Brown Banks is an award-winning poet and popular feature writer.
