Declare Me Writer, Or Declare Me Not!

By Bonnie Florea
Nov. 10, 2005

I’m writing this piece because of some of the articles I have seen displayed here lately. I usually don’t have time these days to write a free article, because the ones that pay take up my time. However, in stating that, it is clear that some who post here think they got the skinny on what a writer is, or is not.

So I could not resist placing a piece on this subject myself.

Where shall I start? Hmm maybe at the description of what a writer is?

Yes, that would be a good place to start.

This is only a short version so don’t go all-medieval on me.

A writer is one who takes pen in hand, or keyboard in this modern day world, and begins their journey into word.

Words are the expressions of a persons thoughts and a connection to communicating with others who read. Writers are complex people; they work in many styles of the written word. You have those who are good at grammar, so they are usually best at writing in an editorial sense, or perhaps a teacher. There are writers that are poetic. Usually these writers become poets and perhaps greeting card creators. There are writers that have a style, or talent for clichés’ these writers may go on to write for commercials or other type things. This is not to say, that a writer cannot be all of these things and then some. For I have not even begun to scratch the surface of a writer.

However, to say a writer is not one because of a typo or lack of a comma is totally false. Especially when one is writing for nothing. Meaning for free, on a free column board. What does it matter to how a paragraph is formed? How someone said “my” when they meant to write “me”?

And, or how many, commas or capitals were placed in this place, or that?

I tell you it matters not a lick, or a smack! When you start paying a buck or two, you might get a better article, perhaps one that is written with time and care, and all politically and technically correct.

To think that it matters in the least little bit when one is just writing for writings sake, it puzzles my mind and arches my brow to think that another can howl like a hound, about some ones else’s credibility as a writer.

What’s it to you on how one writes, as long as they write and have freely displayed the thoughts in their hearts, which they so wanted to say?
