Writing Is For The Reader!

By Amanda Baker
Jan. 9, 2005

I write. I struggle with sentences and structure daily. Why? Because someone out there in the reading world will read my words. I have a need to communicate and place my thoughts on a computer, paper, my hand, tissue and other objects. This is for a nagging need to be read.

Writing is a way of communicating, as is talking, body movements and listening. Each of those activates have a struture. If there were no rules then communication would be impossible. I will explain each form of communication.

First talking; if there were no nouns, adjectives, and verbs, a person would not be able to tell somebody that, "The candy is in the brown bowl." "Candy" is a noun, "is" is a verb, "brown and in" are adjectives. These are learned as children and are taught to people who want to learn english as a second language. With no structure you could say, "Brown candy cars into dirty garbage, blah blah blah." There is no way that an individual could decipher what the person was trying to tell.

Second body movement communication; a subtle way to tell if a person wants something, if the person is angry/happy, and/or if a person is ill. These are again taught to us as children. An American is taught that flashing the middle finger is bad communication. While a hand flying to the throat of someone, indicates that the person is choking. Body movement communication requires being observant. With no observations the person who was choking would be dead with out assistance.

Lastly Listening; this is the hardest form of cummunication. Listening requires patience and someone talking clearly. Not many people have this ability developed (Sadly I must admit this is one of the areas I do have problems with.) If one listens clearly; then that person can learn more, than a person with this skill underdeveloped. Plus a person with clear listening communication skills can talk more clearly.

Back to writing; writing is my favorite form of communication. I can write down what I want to say and not expect input from other people. But there is another aspect of writing that I always need to consider, the reader.

Reading is a great way to be able to learn new opinions. I, as a reader, am anxious to obtain the knowledge a person is willing to share. If a writer does not consider the reader, the reader will have to struggle to find the point the writer is trying to make.

Is that fair to the reader?

I don't think so. The reader is the person willing to spend time on my work. That person is reading for content, information and maybe a little bit of pleasure.

It's arrogant of me to think that the reader will know what is going on. Without writing it properly with the rules of English an article, story, novel and other written material would become hard to read. Plus, this would turn off my audience and loose sales.

It's great to write for myself, but if I am writing in a public forum I must respect my reader. That means struggling daily with the rules of english grammar, so be it!
