Jan. 8, 2005 PublishAmerica accepted both of my previously published novels. Embracing the Wild Wind And Cameo Dreams were both accepted in the timely fashion of two weeks. I did some research on the company after submitting the books and made the decision to decline their generous offer to publish my work. Some writers on this site recommended the company to me. I took their advice, but then I felt that I needed to know more about the publishing company. Who was PublishAmerica, was it a vanity publisher where I would have to solicit my relatives for sales, or would PublishAmerica be sold at "Brick and Morter," book stores as advertised on it's web site? PublishAmerica was not a Dell publishing company, Bandi or Avon, I saw those labels on the side of the books at Barnes and Noble. Harlequin is sold at grocery stores and major book retailers. But PublishAmerica? I looked and looked for one PublishAmerica book at a retailer, not one sold. I asked a manager of Borders Books and was told they never carry PublishAmerica that is was a "Vanity Publisher." I still was not sure. I read the web site and it said, brick and morter stores but not which stores they were sold in. Then, I went to PublishAmerica's own message boards, on those boards were authors asking questions on how many books they should buy. An author paying for their book? That sparked more questions, why should I pay for my own book when I had a copy of my book on my own computer. Was I the one who had to market and sell my work? PublishAmerica sent me a sample contract. I read it and found out that I would have to supply a list of my relatives and freinds so PublishAmerica could market my book. That settled it for me, PublishAmerica was indeed a vanity publisher that marketed themselves as a Dell books. I made a business decision, that I needed a real publisher and could wait for real success. I don't want to be small potatos, I want to be on book store shelves with my name next to Johanna Lidsey, Stephen King, Anne Rice and Peirs Anthony. Some authors start with vanity publishers but I know I need an editor, so I must keep trying to get the big publishers to notice me. PublishAmerica is fine for people who just want to say that they are authors. But authors who make it understand that editing is a must, so that the average person can read the story. PublishAmerica does not meet my needs or my standards. ------------ About the author: Being a full time writer is the hardest job that I have tried. I have written two books that are currently not published because the company that did publish them went out of business. I have written three childrens books and am currently in the process of finishing my third novel. Please write me with any thought that comes to mind about my columns or anything else, opinions are appreciated.
