Keith Cantrell And His Idea Of Science

By Werner Reyneke
Jan. 7, 2005

I fully agree with Keith Cantrell and his idea of the absence of God which he writes about in his article, “The Absence of God in the Universe”. But he makes the following ontologically flawed statements:

“Scientists have work to do. Important work. They're trying to determine where the edge of the universe is and how life started and whether or not we can live in outer space.

Where did we come from? Only science can tell us. Where are we going? Only science can reveal our options.”

Talk about the ‘edge of the universe’ is contradictive because if the universe has an edge, then what is beyond that edge? The point is that if the universe is infinite in extent then it cannot have an edge unless the universe is finite, but then the universe is merely a small part of the infinity of existence. The totality of Being is infinite, as a boundary leaves space for a continuation of Being beyond the boundary of the universe. The bottom line is that when we talk about the universe, the concept should ontologically include in its definition the infinity proper. Thus when we refer to the universe, we refer to everything that is infinity as such and infinity cannot have an edge as such a relation undermines the concept of infinity.

Moreover, science cannot tell us where we come from, where we are going to, etc. Science only study natural phenomena and by virtue of the fact that the human being is part of the universe, subsisting on its foundations and because he is not outside of it in order to observe it from an utterly objective perspective, we can never know the truth of everything. It is like the eye trying to see itself without using itself. As long as the subject partakes in the object, in this case, existence itself, which it endeavors to analyze, it will not be able to understand the totality of everything.
