Jan. 6, 2005 Tired of the rat race? Looking for a career that allows you to “make a difference” while making a living? How about schedule flexibility, short hours and the opportunity to work without a boss breathing down your neck? If so, substitute teaching is a great option! What “Subs” Do: Subs are like understudies are to actors. They are certified teachers who enjoy many of the same perks and privileges of teaching, without the paperwork and parent conferences. They are independent contractors of sorts. They choose the frequency of assignments and the age range of their students. And in this line of work, no two days are the same. Monday might find you teaching poetry to tomorrow’s lyricists, while Friday could be spent imparting business skills knowledge to future leaders. Subs are often allowed to implement their own classroom learning techniques, which could range anywhere from newspaper discussions of current events, to creative writing exercises, to field trips. And from the instant you step through the corridors, there’s never a dull moment! Why So Many are Transitioning to this Field: Many employees in Corporate America tire of office politics, competitiveness, rigid bosses, rampant rules, and little job gratification. In essence, they’ve “burned out”. For others, it’s the desire for a career versus a job. The need for more autonomy, more flexibility and greater personal satisfaction. An added bonus is that this industry tends to be less age oriented. Being a “mature adult” is not frowned upon, and can actually be in one’s favor. Depending upon your economic status, you can hold this position solely, or moonlight while pursuing other interests. It works particularly well for writers, entrepreneurs, those wishing to supplement other income, and those who are semi- retired. Like any other vocation, however, it does have its downside. These are the pros and cons: PROS: - Flexibility/Short Work Hours- (Anywhere from 3- 6 hour workday with breaks included). Summer months off. - Camaraderie of Peers- Teachers are typically wonderful to work with. There’s a pervasive “We’re in this together” mentality. Discounts from Stores and Organizations- Did you know that teachers get discounts at stores and businesses like Borders, Dell Computers, Bally’s Equipment and Office Max? Not to mention, they receive favor in various housing programs. - High Demand- Because of the current teacher’s shortage, caused by retirees and population growth, job prospects are excellent. - Ease of Transitioning- With a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and some testing, this field is relatively easy to get into or out off. - Gratification- Teachers impact lives and mold minds. Not to mention, working with kids will keep you young! CONS: - No Benefits- Unlike other employees, Subs work without health or life insurance coverage. - It’s Challenging Work- Kids of today are much more energetic, more inquisitive and have to deal with some deep social issues that are a product of our times. In many instances, you may be required to be a counselor, a parent and/or friend. Ideally you should enjoy working with youth and have a good deal of patience! - The Pay is Moderate- Considering the integral role played in society, teachers are not paid nearly enough. Especially considering that athletes and entertainers make millions. - Safety can be an Issue- Although violent incidents are far and in between, they do sometimes exist.
